Where it began…
In 1861, a small group of disciples of Jesus began worshipping together in Galion, Ohio. They became The First Presbyterian Church of Galion. The Presbyterian theology believes that the Church of Christian believers must not be just reformed, but always reforming to meet the culture and context in which they worship. The original church building needed to grow to accommodate the mission and ministry of the church.
Small but Mighty
As sometimes happens, membership diminished as some members found the Holy Spirit guiding them into different ministries. The remaining members, through the wise leadership of their Elders and Pastor Gary Proietti, made the decision to let go of a building too large for them; A decision made so that they could let go of the cumbersome expense of maintenance of a building that, while very beautiful and hard-earned, had become too large and costly to focus their efforts on what really matters, the work of discipleship to help those who need it the most. Their investment in the community, in compassionately living out the Great Commandment of Jesus Christ was, and, is far more important than flashy meeting spaces and ostentatious sanctuaries filled with statues and symbols.
For a short time, the Galion First Presbyterian was invited to, and nested into, the United Church of Christ in Galion, Ohio. The UCC congregation received and supported Galion First every step of the way, but the dedicated members of Galion First Presbyterian, and their commitment to retain and worship in the theological history and precepts of the PC(USA), compelled Galion First to look forward instead of backward; to find a new place to worship where their identity could be lived out and their welcoming worship could continue to be shared with others.
The community around Galion First Presbyterian changed as they purchased and moved into a smaller and more efficient building in a more residential area. This small but mighty congregation welcomes everyone. Join us, in person, or on-line.
